Loch brought me back downstairs to an enormous kitchen, where a grey-haired woman kneaded dough.

“Loch! How are you, my boy?” She studied his face and tutted. “Fighting.” Her voice had a broad British accent. “Who do we have here? The men told me that you had a new lady.”

“Trixie, this is Rada.”

To my surprise, she smiled and pulled me into a hug.

“Hello,” I said, shocked into stillness.

She leaned away from me, still gripping my arms. “I’m so glad my boys are settling down.”

“I-I…”

“Ignore Trixie. She is a romantic.” Loch said, opening the fridge.

“Not the meat!” Trixie rushed over and shooed Loch away.

The small woman shoved him, and he moved. She would have had no chance if he hadn’t let her.

“I’ll bring you sandwiches. Now go. Out of my kitchen.” She pointed to the door, and Loch grinned, grabbing some bottles of water and handing one to me as he showed me to a smaller room filled with sofas and a flat-screen TV.

“Trixie is very territorial in her kitchen.”

“Is she a relative?”

Loch laughed. “No, she just thinks she’s everyone’s mother. Sean helped her about a decade ago, and she never left.”

I frowned at him. It seemed a strange action for someone who had threatened me earlier. Sean didn’t seem like someone to take on a fussy older woman.

“I know what you’re thinking. Sean isn’t quite what he appears to be.”

I nearly told him about the threat, but something held me back. Loch might have beat up Cian for threatening me, but something told me things wouldn’t be the same for Sean. I didn’t want Loch getting into trouble.

Loch frowned, then ran a hand down his face. “He’s protective of his family. We grew up together and were practically brothers. All this business with the Stefanov gang is a mess.”

“Does me being Bulgarian cause you problems?” I asked, fearing the answer.

“Why? Are you worried about me?” He grinned.

“No. I… He seems mad,” I said quietly, darting a look around.

“Oh yeah, he’s a mad bastard, but he wouldn’t harm you.”

I hummed, unconvinced.

Trixie came in with a tray full of sandwiches and crisps. My mouth watered at the sight.

“Are more people joining us?” I asked.

“Not unless they want their hands cut off,” Loch said, shoving four sandwiches into his mouth all at once.

“Don’t be greedy.” Trixie smacked the side of his head. “Ladies eat first, you big lug.”

Loch tried to look sorry, but his bulging cheeks ruined the effect, and I giggled again. What was with me today?

Trixie wandered off, muttering about men with no manners as I grabbed a chicken sandwich off the plate. The bread was soft and fresh, and it made me groan. Sitting here like this was strange when I’d been chained so recently. Suddenly, sensations of being cold and exposed rushed over me, and the sandwich turned to ash in my mouth.

I swallowed the mouthful and tossed the rest back onto the plate.

“What’s wrong?

“Nothing.”

My mouth filled with saliva, and I rubbed at my wrists, expecting the cuffs there. Images flickered in my mind, and I cringed.
